Concept of Blockchain

The concept of Blockchain was introduced to the world in 2008 and its main purpose was to support the creation of the Bitcoin cryptocurrency (NAKAMOTO, 2008). That year, many countries were experiencing a severe financial crisis, which caused economic instability and weakened the world economy. In the midst of this scenario, the Blockchain network came up with the proposal to take financial transactions to the digital environment and make it possible to execute them in a decentralized manner, without the need for intermediation from banks or regulatory institutions.

Blockchain consists of distributed and encrypted databases, where they aim to ensure a high level of security through data decentralization (CHICARINO et al. , 2017). All transactions that take place between users are grouped into blocks and these, in turn, are distributed among computers connected to the network. When a new block is generated and validated, it is added to the chain and all others are updated to receive the new data. The registration of the blocks occurs in a chained way, where each one keeps a reference to its previous one, which makes it impossible for new data to be inserted or modified without this altering the chaining of all other blocks in the chain.

Due to the high level of security observed in the use of Blockchain, several proposals for the application of the technology in other areas arose. Among these areas is the use of information technology in education. Currently, many problems are faced by educational institutions, such as the management of students' school life and the occurrence of falsification of diplomas and certificates. The student, in turn, when needing to change institutions, or even courses, goes through numerous bureaucratic processes to perform a new enrollment. In addition, when trying to enter the job market, the student needs to present evidence of the training received and the skills acquired, which is not always a simple task (HARTHY; SHUHAIMI and ISMAILY, 2019).
