WAN port: for advanced and different from LAN

The advanced user needs to understand a little more - the WAN connector is not just a place where you need to stick the cable of your Internet provider, but it is the EXIT from the router. Those. there are entrances, there are exits. I will disassemble "on the fingers".

A home router is the centerpiece of a home LAN. The key word is local. Those. your home is your little network of connected phones, laptops, computers, televisions, and other useful devices.

WAN or LAN? All home devices connect to the router either via Wi-Fi or LAN port. The distribution of IP addresses to them usually occurs through the DHCP server of the router itself.

Those. in this matter, the router allows you to connect any device to itself - an INCOMING connection. But the router can connect itself perfectly - for example, to the global network through the provider, and distribute it to everyone on the local Internet. It makes its outgoing connections via the WAN port (but it can also via Wi-Fi if necessary). Therefore, the provider's wire is usually connected to the WAN.

Sometimes tasks appear, like combining several local networks into one with filtering. Then you can connect from one router via WAN to another router on the LAN. And then you get a kind of exit from LAN to WAN and further to LAN. Those. for the first router, the second network will be like an external one, and it will do its distribution from there. They do not often solve problems in this way, but in my time I have met them.

The systems engineer will often work together with a project manager and the engineering crew and becomes the primary point of communication to interlink between the two to simplify the accomplishment of a successful system.

And finally, as a summary in this section, there are a few differences between WAN and LAN in the context of ports:

They connect to the Internet via the WAN interface, connect local network devices to the router via LAN.

WAN port is usually one and blue, LAN ports are usually several and yellow.

The port connector is usually the same for Ethernet.
